SSL Certificate FAQ & Guide

What is an SSL Certificate?

An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate is a digital certificate that authenticates a website's identity and enables an encrypted connection (HTTPS). It secures sensitive data like passwords, credit card transactions, and private forms from eavesdropping.

How does the SSL Validator check my site?

Our free tool establishes a secure TLS handshake with your domain's host. It retrieves the public SSL certificate, inspects the certificate chain (intermediate certificates), validates the issuer, and calculates the exact remaining days until expiration.

Why do SSL certificates expire?

For security reasons, Certificate Authorities (CAs) limit the lifespan of certificates. Standard Let's Encrypt certificates last 90 days, while commercial certificates last up to 397 days. This ensures that security keys are periodically rotated and cryptographic protocols are kept up to date.

What happens when an SSL certificate expires?

Major web browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox) will display a prominent, alarming security warning ("Your connection is not private") to visitors, blocking access to the site and causing an immediate loss of user trust, search rankings, and business transactions.
