WHOIS Lookup FAQ & Guide
What is WHOIS?
WHOIS is a query and response protocol widely used for querying databases that store the registered users or assignees of an Internet resource, such as a domain name or an IP address block.
How do WHOIS checks work?
A WHOIS check queries a central directory managed by IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority). The initial query determines which registry controls the Top Level Domain (TLD), and then routes queries to the registry server (e.g. Verisign for `.com` domains) to retrieve details like the registrar and expiry date.
Why is monitoring domain expiration critical?
If a domain name expires, all services hosted on it (including website access, APIs, and business email) will immediately stop working. Competitors or malicious domain brokers can quickly register expired domains, making recovery extremely expensive.
Why is some WHOIS information redacted?
Due to modern privacy regulations like GDPR, registrars now redact contact information (emails, names, phone numbers) by default. However, essential data like the registrar name, creation date, and expiration date are always public.
